BULIMIA NERVOSA
Bulimia Nervosa | Overview
Bulimia nervosa is eating disorder that characterized by episodes of
binge-eating that recur, uncontrolled and involve the ingestion of a
large amount off foot in a short time. This binge eating is usually
followed by some form of purging behavior such as vomiting and the
excessive use of laxatives or diuretics.
Like anorexic, the clients with bulimia nervosa has an intense fear
of fatness. This intense fear distinguishes the bulimic from people
who binge-eat for pleasure or to reduce stress.
Some controversy exist about whether bulimia nervosa is separate
syndrome from anorexia nervosa because the clinical manifestation of
bulimia nervosa - binge eating and purging- occur in people at
varied body weights ranging from starved to overweight.
Some client with anorexia nervosa maintain low weight by food
restriction alone but others use purging behaviors to rid themselves
of unwanted calories and at times indulge in an eating binge.
Normal weight bulimia nervosa client's who experience the
binge-purge cycle frequently have a 10-pounds weight fluctuation.
The height-weight bulimic experiences the binge-purge cycle and
overlaps with the obese client who may binge-eat but purge or have a
morbid fear of fatness
Bulimia Nervosa | Pathophysiology
The bulimia nervosa client's secretly eats enormous quantities of
food - often concentrated sweets or fats - very rapidly without
appreciating the taste. The onset of binge may be precipitated by a
variety of factors such as hunger, boredom, anger, anxiety and
depression
Eating bingers may also be triggered by physical causes that are not
yet understood. Bouts of overeating may be provoked or facilitated
by hypothalamic reactions to starvation.
Bulimic spend much of their
day in a starved stated and may actually suffer from chronics
malnutrition with resulting metabolic and endocrine symptoms of
starvation.
Binger eating behavior usually results in feeling of depression and
self-deprecating thoughts. Approximately half of the people with
bulimia nervosa binge-eat daily or more often.
During a binge most
bulimic consume far more calories than would be eaten in a normal
meal. Binge-purge episodes are interspersed with periods of minimal
food intakes and many bulimics do not eat normal meals.
Purging behaviors is an attempt to regain a senses of control and to
eliminate the calories ingested. Most people with bulimia nervosa
report that vomitting is their preferred method of purging
